Offshore Wind: Security and Economic Viability Are Not Contradictions – They Depend on Each Other
Offshore wind farms are not only central to the energy transition – they can also play a key role in national security strategy. Wind farms along the coast are becoming a valuable part of national and European maritime security architecture – both directly and indirectly. Most importantly, they increase independence from fossil fuels and thus from imports that can be exploited as tools of political power.
Dr. Moritz Brake: “Every gigawatt of offshore wind power contributing to Europe’s electricity generation strengthens resilience in times of escalating geopolitical rivalry.”
Yet this is precisely where the challenge begins: these installations are located in sensitive maritime areas and constitute critical infrastructure for society, the state, and even the armed forces – without electricity, there is no defense. Russia’s hybrid attacks against Germany and its allies, as well as its warfare in Ukraine, make it clear: electricity generation has long become a target of geopolitical tension.
At NEXMARIS, we recently had the opportunity to contribute our expertise to a European offshore wind project – with the goal of strengthening security and resilience as core elements of the sustainable economic viability of offshore wind in Europe.
Our mission remains clear: to build bridges between the energy transition and security strategy – for a more resilient Europe.

Weekly Recap at Nexmaris June 25, 2025
This week was marked by high-profile events, personnel developments, and security observations in the maritime domain.
🔹 Windforce Bremerhaven & Kiel Week
Our Senior Maritime Consultant, Hartwig Ross, attended two key maritime events in recent days:
At Windforce in Bremerhaven, discussions focused on offshore wind energy—a crucial topic for the maritime energy transition. There, Hartwig Ross clearly represented our message and Nexmaris’ mission for contributing to this sector: “Europe and Germany must strengthen the resilience of the maritime industry in times of escalating geopolitical tensions.”
Over the weekend, Hartwig Ross was also present at Kiel Week, where alongside sailing sports, security and foreign policy discussions played an important role.
🔹 Changes in Leadership
With the departure of Bertrand Mignot, we bid farewell to one of Nexmaris’ two founders. Together with Dr. Moritz Brake, he played a pivotal role in shaping the development of our company.
We thank Bertrand for his commitment and the consistently inspiring collaboration. We wish him much success and all the best for his future endeavors!
🔹 Welcome to the Network: Luke McBride
With Luke McBride, we gain valuable support for our work. In his role as Senior Operations Manager at Atalantica GmbH, he will now also contribute to Nexmaris.
As a project manager and coach, he follows a people-centered and solution-oriented approach. His diverse experiences in education and project work will enrich our strategic direction—welcome aboard, Luke!
🔹 Developments in the Strait of Hormuz
We are closely monitoring current developments in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite a declared ceasefire between Iran and Israel, the situation remains fragile (24 June, 10:14 AM: Iran breaks the ceasefire). An escalating conflict could, in the worst case, lead to a blockade of the strait. About 20% of the world’s crude oil, as well as significant volumes of natural gas, are transported daily through this route. The conflict once again highlights the security and economic significance of maritime trade routes—for Europe and the world.
